What is a doula?

A question that many in the community ask to Doula they encounter.

A doula is a perinatal support practitioner. Doulas provide educational, emotional, and physical support to both the birther as well as any identified partners and children in the preparation for labor, birth, and postpartum. Doula care is not limited in care. Doula care can be provided during fertility treatments, abortion services, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

A doula provides individuals and families with a deeper interpersonal level of support. They are there for all the questions many hold back from asking during appointments. They are there to teach and advocate. One of the most important things I believe doulas provide is supportive courage. The presence of a doula is often all it takes for people to speak up for themselves as their own advocate or as the advocate for their partner. At the same time, the presence of a doula often lends a hand to medical staff as accountability and support.

When you think about doula support, remember:

If Doulas were a drug, it would be unethical not to use them.

About

ABOUT

THE SOCIAL WORK DOULA

A native Memphian in every way! I have lived and loved the city of Memphis since the day I graced the world! Now I am a mother of one amazing kiddo and helping grow our Memphis community.

Graduating with my Bachelor's in Psychology in 2016, I moved on to receive my Master's in Social Work in 2021. I have also received training in Perinatal Mental Health and am in the process of pursuing certification.

In 2020, I decided to start my journey into birth work. After much research I chose to train with Bebo Mia Inc., a Canadian based international certifying body. I believe they showed respect and regard for different races, cultures, spiritual affiliations, sexual orientation and identity. Through their 16-week extensive Maternal Support Practitioner program, knowledge on Fertility, Abortion, Birth, and Postpartum were covered in detail. For this reason, I identify as a full-spectrum doula with the professional knowledge for whatever birth situation a birth and family encounter.

As passionate as I am about social equality, reproductive justice, and birth work, my number one goal is to make sure every family, especially minority, have access to the doula support they deserve. Doula support is not a luxury, but a necessity for all families.
